  1. he was a dead man because the book takes place in a time of great racism. so there for if a black man was accused of a crime against a white person, whether he did it or not, was ALMOST instantly guilty.

  3. This means that even though Tom was innocent, he would still be found guilty. This is because he was a black man going up against a white jury, and also a white woman going against him. Even though the evidence was there that he didn't do it, since he is colored, he stood no chance.

  4. Even Tom might have been innocent even before he went to trial he was already found guilty. Espcially since he had an all white Jury. During this time blacks were basically a piece of dirt to them. And since Mayella was white of course she was believed over him.

  5. Tom was basically screwed no matter what because he was an African American, and from the second she screamed and her dad came in it was all over. and know one wouldn't convict him of doing it even if it was bogus..... Which it was.

  6. Ok so this quote basically means that since Tom Robinson is a black man no matter what happened he would be convicted guilty because of his race. All of the evidence was there that he was innocent but it did him no good since he was black. It also didn't help that he was being charged of raping a "white" woman and he was going against a "white" jury.

  7. It was showing that he has no chance on being not guilty. Even theough the evidence showed that he was not guilty. The only reason he had no chance at this trial was because he was an African American.

  8. He is pretty much guilty because of the color of his skin. The only reason he was found guilty was because of his skin color. Atticus knew he wouldn't win because black men are always found guilty and doen't stand a chance against a white man.

  9. Since Tom is a black man, it basically means that no matter what, after Mayella accused Tom, no matter what Tom said or did, he was screwed. Blacks didn't have much of a voice in that society, so Tom wouldn't win no matter how hard he tried.

  10. Tom was black so this means he would be guilty. It didn't matter what evidence there was, Tom would be convicted guilty. The reason is that hew as black. he was a black man going against a white girl and the jurry was white.

  12. Tom was innocent but, because he was a colored man he really didn't have a choice but to plead guilty. He was the only black man against the whole jury which happened to be all white men. Tere was even evidence! Yet he still did not stand a chance against the jury or the judge.

  14. Well since everyone was racist and Tom was black he did not stand a chance against a white jury and they were also racist. Naughty people!!

  15. It just means that tom was dead before he even went to court. no matter what the punishment would have been for the bob's daughter since tom is black there was no chance in his saying. the jury should have seen the way that the girl was trying to make things up as she went on with her stroy.
